BEFORE THE BROADCAST
Today you’re going to hear another story. It’s about a bushfire (= kebakaran hutan) in the country in Australia. Bushfires are common in some parts of Australia. The summers are very hot, and when there isn’t much rain the grass gets very dry and burns easily. The farms have big paddocks (= lapangan yang dipagari), so a bushfire is often difficult to get under control (= diatasi). When there is a bushfire, all the men go and help, and the women prepare tea and food for them.
Iwan is visiting Mr and Mrs Brown on their farm. Their names are Peter and Mary. Remember, he visited them before. They have a daughter—Emma. She’s eighteen. Iwan didn’t meet her on his first visit.
The other people you’ll hear are Mr and Mrs Mason. The bushfire is on their farm.
THE BROWN FAMILY AND IWAN HAVE A CUP OF TEA ON THE VERANDAH
MR BROWN: Oh, boy! It’s hot!
MRS BROWN: It’s a bit cooler here, on the verandah.
MR BROWN: Not much. The radio said the maximum temperature would be thirty-five degrees today. And we’re going to have a storm. I’m a bit worried.
IWAN: Is it always as hot as this here—I mean, at this time of the year?
MR BROWN: No, it isn’t. But it’s been hot for a couple of weeks. And there hasn’t been any rain. The grass is very dry and it’s long, too, after the rain we had in the winter. A fire could easily start.
IWAN: I see. That’s why you’re worried, then.
MR. BROWN: Yes, that’s why I’m worried. Most Australian farmers worry about bushfires in the summer.
a bushfire [BUSYfaiə]
a fire could easily start [ə FAIƏ kəd _Īzəli STĀT] = kebakaran mudah terjadi
A FIRE HAS STARTED AT MR MASON’S PLACE, AND IWAN AND MR BROWN ARE ON THEIR WAY THERE
IWAN: What’ll happen when we get to the fire, Mr Brown?
MR BROWN: Mr Mason will tell us what to do. Some of the men have got fire-fighting equipment like mine. Wet bags are used a lot, too. And bushes are used too. This fire’s in the grass, so it can be controlled with wet bags and bushes. There it is! When we get there, stay close to me, Iwan.
IWAN: Gee! It looks frightening!
MR BROWN: It’ll be O.K., I think. Unless there’s a wind.
MR MASON: Hi, Peter! Glad you’ve come. We need a few more men. Can you go down to the corner of that paddock?
MR BROWN: O.K. Come on, Iwan. Bring a bag. Put it under that tap over there. Now, start beating the fire there.
IWAN: Is this right?
MR BROWN: Yes. Keep on beating. That’s right.

EVERYONE IS FIGHTING THE FIRE
MR MASON: The wind’s getting stronger! It’s blowing the fire towards the house! Over there, everyone!
MR BROWN: Look! It’s in the trees now!
VOICE: And the shed! It’s alight! What can I do? Where do you want me to go?
MR MASON: Get some buckets. Tell Mrs Mason to leave the house. Hurry! Run!
VOICE: O.K.
MR BROWN: Where’s Mary?
MR MASON: She took some tea to the men in the far paddock. Can you go and get her? And tell the men to come with the truck. We need it here. There’s a long hose on it.

IWAN: I’m hurrying, Emma.
VOICE: Emma! Iwan! Where are you?
EMMA: Here! We’re coming.
VOICE: Hurry! There’s a tree alight near the road.
EMMA: I can see it! O.K. We’ll be all right.
IWAN: What did he say?
EMMA: See that tree? It’s going to fall in a minute. If we don’t get the sheep past it, it might fall on them. Or it might fall on us, Iwan! Iwan! It might fall on us! Look out! Iwan! The tree!
VOICE: The tree! It’s fallen! George, Bill! Come on! The tree’s fallen on Iwan! Hurry!
MR BROWN: What about Mrs Mason?
MR MASON: She’s all right at the moment. The wind isn’t so strong. And all the house is wet. But hurry—the tree—Iwan—I hope he’s safe.
We haven’t got long [wī HÆVənt GOT LONG] = Kita tidak ada banyak waktu/Kita terdesak waktu
get the sheep past it (the tree) [GET dhə SYĪP PĀST _ət] = menggiring biri-biri menjauhinya (pohon itu)

THE WIND BLOWS THE SMOKE AND FLAMES TOWARDS THE HOUSE
MR BROWN: Look out! Mrs Mason!
MR MASON: Get out! Leave the house!
VOICE: Move the car!
MR MASON: It’s too late! The garage is alight!
VOICE: Put the hose on the garage!
MRS MASON: What about the furniture?
MR MASON: It’ll have to be left. We haven’t got time to move it.
MRS MASON: Can’t I go back and get some things?
MR MASON: No!
VOICE: Bring the hose over here. That’s right. On those bushes. Put it on the verandah roof.
MRS BROWN: The smoke! I can’t see!
EMMA: Here, Mum, give me that bucket. Sit down over there for a minute.
IWAN: I’ll help you, Emma.
EMMA: Be careful of your arm.
IWAN: Yes, I will.
MRS MASON: Where’s the cat? I haven’t seen it. It must be inside.
MR MASON: Don’t worry, it probably left the house ages ago. Cats don’t like fires either, you know.
MRS MASON: Well, I hope it’s safe.
MR BROWN: I think the wind’s dropping a bit.
MRS MASON: Do you think we can save the house?
MR MASON: I think so. Ah. I think we’re getting the fire under control now.
MRS MASON: But the garage is burnt! And the car!
MR MASON: I know. But if we can save the house, I’ll be the happiest man in Australia.

THE FIRE IS UNDER CONTROL, AND THE BROWNS AND IWAN ARE DRIVING HOME
EMMA: Gee! Look at those fences! They’ve been badly damaged, haven’t they?
MRS BROWN: And that gate’s been burnt too.
MR BROWN: Yes. They’ll have to be repaired. Are you any good at repairing fences and gates, Iwan?
IWAN: Well, I’ve never tried, but . . .
MR BROWN: I’m sure you’ll be able to help. I thought I’d come over tomorrow and give Jack Mason a hand.
MRS BROWN: That’s a good idea. What about Iwan’s arm, though?
IWAN: Oh, it’ll be better by tomorrow, Mrs Brown. Don’t worry.
EMMA: I’d like to go too. I can help Mrs Mason clean up. And in the garden.
MR BROWN: Good. We’ll all go, then. After a fire everyone has to help. We’ll have to build a new garage, too.
MRS BROWN: There’s certainly been a lot of damage. And look at those poor sheep! They look so frightened.
MR BROWN: That’s another job. They’ll have to be fed till the grass grows again.
EMMA: And poor Mr Mason! He’ll have to be careful for days—the fire could start again.
MR BROWN: I don’t think it will. And I think it’s going to rain—at last. The rain will put the fire out and it’ll make the grass grow too.
