Pelajaran 52 – Cerita dari Australia Keluarga Scott dan Keluarga Rossi

PART I: BEFORE THE BROADCAST

Minggu ini siaran kita lain.

Kita tidak akan mengikuti suatu pelajaran seperti biasa, melainkan mengunjungi semua kawan-kawan lama—keluarga Scott, dan keluarga Rossi beserta keluarga tetangga mereka.

Kita mengunjungi mereka pada waktu yang istimewa—yaitu pada waktu Natal.

Dalam siaran ini saudara akan mendengar kawan-kawan saudara berbicara mengenai rencana mereka untuk Natal.

Kemudian pada hari sebelum Hari Natal dan pada Hari Natal juga kita akan mengunjungi mereka.

Saudara akan mempelajari bagaimana Hari Natal dirayakan di Australia.

Untuk menolong saudara mengerti dan menikmati siaran ini, dalam buku ini kami akan memberikan beberapa petikan dari siaran—tidak seluruh isi siaran tetapi beberapa bagian saja.

Bacalah bagian-bagian ini sekarang sebelum saudara mendengarkan siarannya.

We must make plans.

Christmas is an important time of the year.

Jane . . . you and Don will come here for dinner, of course.

JANE: Of course.

And I’ll bring the ham.

And what about the pudding?

MRS SCOTT: Helen and I have already made the pudding.

We made it a couple of weeks ago.

Listen, I’ve got an idea!

MR SCOTT: Listen carefully!

Your mother has an idea!

MRS SCOTT: Stop teasing me!

I want to ask the Rossi family here for Christmas dinner.

It’s their first Christmas in Australia.

HELEN: They’ve got Mr Rossi’s brothers here, you know.

Perhaps they will spend Christmas Day with them.

MRS SCOTT: Yes.

Well, what about Christmas Eve?

Can we ask them to come then?

We always sing carols then . . . And they’ll go to midnight mass after the carols.

HELEN: That sounds like a great idea.

Let’s ask them!

HELEN: We always have our Christmas dinner at midday.

And it’s usually very hot then!

LUCIA: What do you eat?

HELEN: We always have turkey and ham.

Mum cooks it on Christmas morning, after we come back from church.

And we have hot plum pudding.

Mum and I have already made that, so on Christmas Day we just heat it.

We have a special sauce with it, and there’s some money inside the pudding too.

LUCIA: Money?

HELEN: Yes.

When we make the pudding we put some five-cent pieces in it.

When you find money in your piece of pudding on Christmas Day . . . it’s . . . well, it’s lucky.

LUCIA: But why do you eat hot food?

HELEN: You see, Lucia, our Christmas here in Australia is very like an English Christmas.

LUCIA: Ah, yes.

I understand.

HELEN: So, many people do all the traditional things—like an English Christmas.

In England, now, it’s very cold.

Perhaps it’s snowing.

So English people want to eat hot food, and rich food.

But here in Australia it’s the middle of summer, so . . .

LUCIA: So hot food is not really suitable?

HELEN: No, it isn’t!

But it’s traditional, you see.

We haven’t got any snow, but we eat hot turkey and plum pudding!

And it’s a bit the same all over the world, where there are Christian people.

We celebrate the birth of Christ.

LUCIA: Yes, we celebrate that too, of course.

HELEN: The food people eat at Christmas in Australia is probably a bit different from the food you eat in Italy.

LUCIA: Yes, it is.

HELEN: And the Christmas customs are different too.

Here, we follow the English customs.

We usually go to church on Christmas morning and we sing special Christmas hymns.

It’s nice, I like it.

LUCIA: Does everybody in Australia go to church?

HELEN: No, not everyone.

Some people only go to church on Christmas Day.

It’s a special religious day.

LUCIA: So . . . you go to church and you eat a big, hot dinner . . . and . . .

HELEN: It’s a family day too, of course.

Don and Jane always spend Christmas Day with us and grandma and grandpa always come too.

We usually invite some relatives to spend Christmas Day with us, too.

MAX: Why?

Do people buy a lot of fruit at Christmas?

GUIDO: No, they don’t buy a lot of fruit.

But they buy a lot of Christmas trees.

MAX: Oh, that’s right.

You sell Christmas trees too, don’t you?

GUIDO: Yes, and we sell Christmas bush and Christmas bells.

Everyone wants to buy those Australian flowers at this time of the year.

MAX: I must buy some Christmas bush for Jenny.

She loves it.

GUIDO: What are you going to do at Christmas, Max?

MAX: Oh, we have the children’s grandparents for Christmas dinner.

On Boxing Day we . . .

GUIDO: What’s Boxing Day?

MAX: Boxing Day is the day after Christmas.

It’s a holiday too, of course.

We usually go to the beach on Boxing Day.

Or there’s often a good tennis match on.

I’m going to take some holidays after Christmas.

It’s a good time of the year for holidays.

GUIDO: Yes, it’s a family time, and it’s a holiday time, too, isn’t it?

HELEN: It smells delicious.

MRS SCOTT: And I’m heating the plum pudding.

Now . . . is there anything else?

JANE: The ham’s ready.

And I’ve decorated the table.

MRS SCOTT: Dad and I love the record, Helen.

HELEN: Good.

I got some beautiful presents.

Christmas is marvellous, isn’t it?

JANE: It isn’t marvellous for everyone, you know.

HELEN: I know.

But you and Don have helped someone.

You’ve given presents to some lonely children.

MRS SCOTT: Well, Helen . . . Jane . . . your grandparents will be here soon.

HELEN: And then after dinner we’re going to visit Uncle Bill . . .

MRS SCOTT: Of course.

We always visit him on Christmas Day.

JANE: And we eat too much!

MRS SCOTT: Well, that’s Christmas too.

JANE: I’ve been thinking about Chris and Iwan all the morning.

HELEN: Yes, I have too.

I wonder what they’re doing?

MRS SCOTT: Do they have Christmas in Indonesia?

HELEN: Yes.

A lot of people celebrate Christmas there.

They have a holiday, and Boxing Day is a holiday too.

But they don’t give each other presents.

JANE: They send cards to each other.

HELEN: And they probably eat special food.

MRS SCOTT: We’re going to eat our special food soon.

I can hear our visitors.

Let’s go and meet them and wish them a Merry Christmas.

I hope everyone in the world has a Merry Christmas!
