Pelajaran 104 – Pelajaran Terakhir

Today you’re going to listen to the last broadcast in your English course. You’ll hear all your old friends. Helen has returned from England, so you’ll meet her again too.

Today’s lesson is different. We want you just to listen and join in the fun. At the end of the broadcast we’ve got a surprise for you. And everyone will sing two songs. Perhaps you know these songs. If you know them, we hope you’ll sing them with us.

To help you understand the broadcast we’ll give you some parts of it here:

HELEN IS HOME AGAIN. SHE’S LOOKING AT THE CHRISTMAS CARDS THE FAMILY HAS RECEIVED

HELEN: Gosh! What a lot of cards, Chris!

CHRIS: Yes. We received a lot this year.

HELEN: Let’s see what’s in this one. ”To dear Chris, best wishes to you and your family, Anna.” Who’s Anna?

CHRIS: Oh, she’s just a girl I know.

HELEN: And another one from Vicki.

CHRIS: Yes. She’s a friend of Anna’s.

HELEN: And another one—Julia. Oh, I remember her. She used to work in the library, didn’t she?

CHRIS: That’s right. Then she moved to Queensland.

HELEN: Yes. I remember her. You used to spend a lot of time in the library—studying.

CHRIS: Yes. Well, I didn’t study all the time.

HELEN: And one from Angela and Teresa. And Jenny. Goodness, what a collection!

CHRIS: And there are cards from Tony and Alex—you remember—and Ray. Iwan and I have a lot of friends, you know.

HELEN: Yes. This one’s for Iwan—from Geraldine. ”To dear Iwan . . . with best wishes and fond memories, see you soon, ‘cuddles’, Geraldine”. Fond memories! Cuddles! What does she mean—”cuddles”?

CHRIS: Oh, Helen, it’s just a joke. Here, look at some of the other cards.

HELEN: Who’s Geraldine?

CHRIS: She’s a journalist. She wrote a story about Iwan for the newspaper. And then they went out to dinner at a restaurant, that’s all. Come on, look at these other cards.

The new words in that part are:

LUCIA: Oh, a card from Ron. Do you remember when we went out on his boat, Chris?

CHRIS: Oh, yes. I was seasick.

HELEN: I suppose you ate too much as usual, Chris.

CHRIS: I had some delicious es apokat. But I had too much.

HELEN: As usual. Here’s one from Mr and Mrs Adams. Oh, yes. They invited Iwan home for a meal. Mr Adams had been to Indonesia, hadn’t he?

CHRIS: That’s right. He worked for the Department of Agriculture.

HELEN: And one from Greg Richards. You know, the little boy next door, Lucia. He went swimming with Iwan and Chris one day.

LUCIA: Yes, I know him.

CHRIS: He’s in Melbourne with his parents for a holiday.

HELEN: And one from Peter and Mary Brown and a special greeting from Emma. Who are they, Chris?

CHRIS: Oh, they’re some people who live in the country. They invited Iwan to visit their farm. And there was a bushfire. And Iwan helped to fight the fire.

HELEN: Oh yes. Mum told me about that in a letter. What about Emma?

CHRIS: She’s their daughter. I haven’t met her, but she sometimes writes letters to Iwan.

HELEN: I see. Oh, look at this beautiful card. Oh, it’s from your family, Lucia. It’s beautiful!

LUCIA: My mother sent it. I sent a special one to Chris.

CHRIS: Yes, I got it, Lucia. Thank you. It was a beautiful card, with a beautiful message.

HELEN: Can I see it?

CHRIS: No. It’s just for me.

JANE: Don! Helen’s too sensible to get married yet. She doesn’t want a husband.

DON: I’m only kidding.

JANE: Now, I’ve got some news for you, Helen. I’m going to have a baby!

HELEN: Oh, Jane! Oh, that’s wonderful!

DON: You’ll be an aunt. Aunty Helen. And Uncle Chris.

HELEN: Oh, Jane!

JANE: Don’t cry, Helen. It’s all right, dear.

HELEN: I’m just crying because I’m happy.

JANE: Oh, you’ll make me cry too.

DON: Oh, cut it out, you two. What are you crying for?

MARGARET: What’s the matter? Don, what have you been doing to these girls? What are they crying for?

DON: Me? I didn’t say anything. Jane told Helen she was going to have a baby and now they’re crying . . . like babies!

MARGARET: Oh, you men! You just don’t understand. She’s going to have a baby!

(DON GOES OUT—HELEN STOPS CRYING)

HELEN: Ah, that’s better. Now, tell me some more news. When is the baby due?

JANE: At the beginning of July.

HELEN: Oh, that’s a long time. What are you going to call it?

JANE: I’m not sure. If it’s a girl I might call it Jane Margaret.

MARGARET: No. That’s old-fashioned. Think of something modern.

HELEN: And if it’s a boy?

JANE: Maybe Philip Gregory.

In the broadcast, at the end, everybody will sing two songs. One is called Auld Lang Syne—it is a song we sing at midnight on New Year’s Eve, or at a farewell party. The words of this song are very old-fashioned and are difficult for you to understand. But perhaps you know the tune, and can join in by humming when our friends sing. The other song is For They Are Jolly Good Fellows. The words of this song, which is sung when we are celebrating something special, like a birthday, are very easy:

And so say all of us. . . .
